When first built, Route 66 embodied the most modern and innovative road construction planning and building techniques of its day. In celebration of the road's Centennial, ten Sections of the American Society of Civil Engineers [ASCE] have designated America’s Mother Road as aNational Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

History Landmark Designation
ASCE’s National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark Program recognizes historically significant local, national, and international civil engineering projects, structures, and sites. Designating Route 66 a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, places it in the distinguished company of the Hoover Dam, the Panama Canal, the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, the Golden Gate Bridge, and more.
With the designation secured, a series of dedicatory plaques will be installed in each state through which Route 66 runs.
- Increase public appreciation of Route 66’s civil engineering contributions to the progress and development of our nation’s transportation system.
- Encourage the preservation of Route 66 as a significant historic civil engineering work, through its documentation and maintenance as a designated landmark.
