The Top of Texas Heritage Ride is a Road Bicycle Benefit Race organized by the Community Engagement Unit of The Amarillo Police Department All proceeds from this event will benefit a local Amarillo charity. This is the inaugural year of this event, and this year the benefactor of the event is One Chair at a Time. One Chair at A Time is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for adolescents and young adults with physical disabilities by providing sports wheelchairs, education and opportunities for participation in adaptive sports. Competing in sports is important to many young people in our area but can be difficult for the physically disabled. The opportunities for participation are fewer, and the equipment is specialized and expensive. Tennis chairs, Rugby chairs, Racing chairs and hand cycles are some examples.
The Top of Texas Heritage Ride is a ride that shows the splendor and history of Amarillo. The route is designed to show the major landmarks in Amarillo. These include The Big Texan, Slug Bug Ranch, AQHA, the Barrio Neighborhood, Hodge Town, New City Hall, Centennial Plaza, The Amarillo Police Department, Route 66, Amarillo Country Club, John Ward Memorial Park (AKA Medi Park), the Don Harrington Discovery Center, Amarillo Botanical Gardens, the old Helium Plant, the Wind Farms, Cadillac Ranch, the Historical Wolflin Neighborhood, Amarillo College, the Downtown Church District, Chamber of Commerce building, Polk St, Historical Potter County Courthouse, and the new Potter County Court House.
