Background

The Route 66 Centennial Commission Act (H.R. 66)was passed by the U.S. Congress on December 17, 2020 and signed into law by President Donald J. Trump on December 23, 2020.

The act establishes the U.S. Route 66 Centennial Commissionto guide and lead the United States' centennial commemoration of this iconic American treasure.Your project can be certified as an official part of the centennial commemoration and celebrationas long as it aligns with the Route 66 Centennial Strategy adopted by the U.S. Route 66 Centennial Commission:

The strategy of the Route 66 Centennial is to celebrate and commemorate the historic milestone of the 100th Anniversary of Route 66 – and leverage it to honor the road by helping the millions who live, work, and travel along it.

What does it cost to get my project certified?

It does not cost anything. The project simply needs to align with the Route 66 Centennial Strategy and the general rules for certified programs.

When we refer to the "Project" it is inclusive of projects, events, programs, and activities all of which are eligible. For simplicity we will use the term: "Project". Your Project needs to align with one or more of the following strategic goals:

  • The Project needs to involve the public in a special, unique, and/or fun celebration of the historic milestone of Route 66’s 100th anniversary.
  • The Project needs to recognize the role Route 66 played in U.S. history and publicly honor the Road and the people associated with it.
  • The Project helps the people who live, work, and travel Route 66 via the promotion, preservation, research/education, and/or economic development of Route 66..
  • The Project highlights Route 66’s cultural diversity by purposefully telling and interpreting the under-told Route 66 stories of minorities and other underrepresented groups.

To qualify, you will need to certify and acknowledge that your project aligns with all of the following conditions and rules. This acknowledgment and your submission of the answers is binding to you and/or your organization. This includes:

  • The Project does not discriminate based on race, ancestry, creed, religion, color, gender, national origin, citizenship, age, sex, or sexual orientation.
  • The Project does not deal with political, illegal, religious, or other elements that do not align with the Route 66 Centennial Strategy.
  • The Project's use of the Route 66 Centennial Certified Emblem is solely limited to marketing and/or promotional purposes for the Project as submitted and approved.
  • In addition to being used for marketing/promotional purposes, the Route 66 Centennial Certified Emblem may include use for fundraising purposes in support of Official Route 66 Centennial projects, per a licensing agreement.
  • As a submitter you will be asked to acknowledge you are over 21 years of age.
  • You, and/or the applying organization, grant permission to the U.S. Route 66 Centennial Commission and its affiliates to promote, present, discuss, post about, and share information regarding you, the Project, and/or the organization in connection with the Certified project. This includes the right to use your or your organization’s name, likeness, and/or logo in any existing or future medium.
  • You will be asked to acknowledge that these ackknowledments are binding on you and/or the applying organization (“You”). If You fall out of compliance during the course of your project, you are subject to the unconditional revocation of your project's certification and your right to use any associated symbols, verbiage, or logos. You will be asked to agree to comply with any such request if received..

The application is fairly simple and straight forward. You want to prepare the information before you access the submission form in step 3. The form will ask you about the following:
